Fishing pics

Couch surfers, whale meat and cold weather

We had two couch surfers from America via Korea come stay with us. They were very nice girls. The first night we went to a bar in Namba, my flatmate acted as bartender because the real bartender was absent. The bar was therefore actually closed but we managed to get inside on condition that he pour the drinks. Yesterday I had a very boring day. At 5.30 I went for a run and it was very cold, very cold. Another couch surfer came stay with us. It was great, they cooked us a huge dinner. However, they bought whale! that's just not on- I stoutly refused to eat it. That's one thing Aussies can't do, you would be branded a traitor.
The two girls left to take the midnight bus to Tokyo and I was pretty sick so I just took it easy. In the morning the other couch surfer cooked us lunch, I recommend that people host couch surfers! Lots of free food. Giddy up!
I'm just relaxing today, bracing for New Year's eve partying tonight.

Party and fishing

Last night we went for Stew's international working holiday party. Unlimited drinks-can't complain. Very good atmosphere, everyone was mingling and having a good time. I managed to make the last train home. I had to get up early today. I met up with Natsuko at 9 am at Shin Imamiya. station. We took the Nankai line to Kawachinagano station, near the border between Osaka and Wakayama prefectures, in search of a trout lake. Apparently the water levels were low at the dam, so we looked on the local map and with a little help from an off duty busdriver we made it to the fishing area up in the mountains. Apparently the levels of trout were low, so the man who ran the trout farm put about 10 in our part of the river. Even so, it was pretty hard to catch them, I caught 1, Natsuko caught 1 and then we went back to the trout farm clubhouse. The obachan cooked them up for us and we had a couple of beers. By the time we were finished the owner of the farm had caught all our fish and put them in bags.
Afterwards we went for a walk in the beautiful area. Got home at about 5, we gutted all the fish and cooked them up. They tasted so good! All and all, a great day...
except for Tsutaya video store charging me 420 yen in late fees.

Christmas

My cousin, Alana came to visit on Wednesday, she came with her boyfriend. They stayed at my house last night. Good fun. We went out for all you can eat sushi, with a free beer it was only 1575 yen, bloody cheap. I ate 10 plates, Alana 9, Daniel had 30...
That was Christmas Eve although it really didn't feel like it. Today I had to work but it was fun, although the weather wasn't. We met up-me, them and Natsuko for some ramen, we walked around for 20 minutes in that maze of a Umeda station looking for their baggage. Eventually we found it, they set off for Kyoto, whilst me and Natsuko went to the ferris wheel in Umeda. It was my first time to ride on it and it didn't dissapoint for 500 yen.
Although quite different from a usual Christmas, all in all not a bad one.

Looong walk

Last night we had a house party and then went out to 'Rock Rock', damn that was loud. The night didn't get off to the best start-when asking for directions, two people turned their backs on me! Inside 'Rock Rock' some girls were waiting all night to get a glimpse of a Japanese band who were in the VIP room. I hope they got a picture. I walked home and was watching 'Back to the Future 2' but I fell asleep. Woke at 2 today and we ordered a pizza-pretty good, pretty greasy, feeling pretty sick. I had nothing to do today so i went on a lone 3 hour walk, pretty stuffed when I got back. Originally planned to go into the forest, but it was just too damn scary. Was crossing the big street near my house when a motorcycle gang decided to go through the red light. Absolute morons nearly hit me. It's not too hard-red means stop. Green means go. Although I'm not too sure about the other colour...

Insulted

Today, I was walking back from the station, minding my own business, when an old homeless man besieged me with a volley of colourful insults. I reckon those swear words were the only English he knew. Nonetheless, his mastery of them was quite impressive.
Today I watched 'Back to the Future 2" before heading to work. Teaching two little kids gave me a headache and I was glad it only lasted 50 minutes. After work I went for a walk in the forest. It was very dark, very cold and very spooky. I was absolutely stuffed when I got home at 10.30.

BELATED ACCOUNT : My Return to Australia

I forgot to mention my return to Japan, 05/12/08.
My Dad dropped me off at the airport. While we were waiting for the flight I saw Gary Lyon-the famous Australian retired footballer and television personality!
I thought I had plenty of time to get to the plane but as I approached the terminal the sign flashed 'last call'. I panicked as I imagined missing the flight, I really would've been up 'shit's creek'. I would've been stuck at the airport for one, I would've had to buy a very expensive ticket and miss work, not to mention all the stress and hassle. It was to my great relief then that the lovely lady told me 'don't worry, you have plenty of time' whoo- that was lucky. Just as we were about to leave the tarmac the flight attendant told us that he could smell marijuana and he was calling security, for some reason security never showed up, probably too lazy.
After 3 three hours of mainly sleep we arrived in Cairns. Just waited around and bought a muffin. The flight from Cairns to Osaka was long, I couldn't sleep and my cold was giving me trouble. I was relieved when I arrived at Osaka, Nishi Nari actually seemed good as I approached my apartment building. I bought some food and ate my first meal of the day at about 9.30-happy to be back.

Drinking and Christmas decorations

We had the Football presentation on Saturday and I won a huge bottle of Bundaberg rum!!!
Afterwards we went to 'Sam and Daves' nightclub. The best part of the night was when the chick jumped onto the bar and started dancing on the conveniently located pole. That was good in itself, and then the bartender lit the bar on fire! What a night! We walked home, I got lost a few times but eventually made it home. Last night I went to Kyoto and looked at the ROHM Christmas decorations-very beautifully. The only downside was when I dropped my toffee apple after one bite. My anguished cry could not save it, it was probably a blessing in the end as the apple tasted a little crappy.

Return to Australia

On Saturday I set off to Australia. There was a fair bit of waiting around on my return as I had to go from Osaka to Haneda in Tokyo then Narita, Tokyo which is the international airport and then I had to transfer in Sydney before finally arriving at 12. It was strange to be back. My dog seemed to recognise me-it was great to see him!
I invited a lot of friends over and we had a big feast. On Sunday I went down to Geelong which is about 60 km from Melbourne to visit my grandparents. My Nana cooked roast lamb and vegetables. That was so good. One year without it was too long!
Me and my older brother Alexi went to the CBD on Monday and watched the 'homeless soccer world cup'. Monday night me and my friend Eric went to a bar and had a few beers-Carlton Draught and it tasted as crap as ever. Today I ate a meat pie and tonight I'm having pizza-you can't get too much better than that! I'm heading back tomorrow at 4.30 in the morning! I think I'll pull an all nighter, no sleep tonight. The weather here is really good and I've really been enjoying the greenery and nice air of Melbourne. Nishi Nari will seem pretty dreary tomorrow and I'll miss the fruit-since Ive been here I've eaten about 250 apples.

Very Cold

I got my re entry permit for Japan, now I will return to Australia for 4 days. I really can`t wait to get back, it`s going to feel so weird.
I`m so glad that I got the final working holiday extension, now I can stay until June 1st. I was really relieved to recieve it. Last weekend we had a party at my flat. Bloody hell, the weather in Japan has really changed recently. The past few days have been absolutely freezing, 5 degrees in the morning, it makes it a little difficult to get into the shower without squealing like a little girl!
Howeve it is the perfect weather to achieve one of my goals in Japan. Me, an onsen and a tray of hot sake in the snow. Whoo that`ll be sweet.

New Visa!

Well, my new visa has arrived so now I can stay in Japan until June!
We played footy on Saturday against the Hawks, the weather was freezing and I was really hungry. I copped a fair battering and was pretty sore by the end. To their credit the Hawks played very well and very hard. We ended up losing by about 4 goals but we tried our best. This means we don`t play in the Grand Final in Tokyo, our season is finished. After the game Stew had an international party, because I hadn`t eaten all day I was very drunk after a few beers. It was great fun. The next day I just read books. I didn`t eat until 6pm. I was very hungry.

Kobe and Yaki Niku

Me and my girlfriend Natsuko went to Kobe last Sunday. We went to the harbour, Kitano Gaijin houses and to the top of Mount Rokko. We took the cable car to the top. That thing is scary, it seems a little bit shabby judging from the creaks and groans it makes as it struggles to the top. Everyone in the carriage thought we were going to die. The view from the top was great and the Kobe view wasn`t bad either. Kobe is a lovely city- mountains on one side, the ocean on the other, Nishi Nari, where I, live is a crappy city- homeless people on one side, garbage on the other. I also went to a yaki niku (Korean bbq) restaurant with my student, that was so good, we had wagyu beef. The only downside was I ate way to much and felt like throwing up afterwards.

Footy

We played footy last Saturday. What a game. We needed to win to avoid having going to Tokyo twice. Everyone played really well and the weather was beautiful. We ended up beating the Senshu Powers by 60 points. Afterwards we had a look around Universal Studios Japan and we saw a little monkey! It was doing all sorts of tricks. At 7 we had a party at the blue billabong. Naturally we had a lot to eat and drink followed by a 100 metre race outside the bar. Woo, that was a sight, we proceeded to drunkingly walk to a club in Namba, after purchasing the whisky it all became a bit of a blur. It was a good day.

Tokyo Australian Rules Football Trip

We went up to Tokyo on Saturday with the footy team. The night bus wasn`t so bad except for the fact that the colossus of a man sitting next to me kept on sweating on me. I arrived at 7 and went straight to the park where the football competition was being played. I`m a little unfit and after the game I was absolutely buggered! We lost both games but we had fun. Afterwards we had a poolside party, all you can eat and drink. Some people got pretty drunk. Many people jumped into the pool. I`m quite suprised that no one drowned.
The next day we went to a maid cafe in Akihabara, whoo that was an experience. Quite bizarre. I was a little let down, the girls do say `Welcome home Master, may I sit?` however I was expecting them to act a little more slave-like. Holding my drink to my mouth and the like, oh well. We also went to the famous temple in Asukasa and the shopping district of Harajuku. The night bus on the way back was alright, although that time I was stuck between two people. The guy who was sitting in the aisle was using the armrest, I believed I was entitled to that armrest as I had the more expensive seat. I felt a little cheated, however I made it home safe and well though a little tired, but well and truely happy that I went.
Unfortunately my camera was broken so I couldn`t take any photos.

Getting Busy

Well, after Sunday`s laziness I decided to get busy. I did all sorts of things yesterday such as cleaning the bathroom, doing exercise, reading, working and it was great. By the time I went to bed I was pretty buggered, however the noises of the Midosuji, the big road that runs past my flat seemed to seep into my dreams and turn them into nightmares. You wouldn`t belive some of the sounds you hear. It is a little bit like the road that leads to Mount Doom in `Lord of the Rings`. Huge black trucks billowing plumes of acrid smock, motorcycles with their mufflers removed, ambulances, beeping and screeching and so on. However, once I closed the window I slept soundly.

Party!

Well, last night was great fun! Stew had a working holiday party, we moved about 290 litres of alcohol on a trolley from his house to the party location and nearly had about 5 heart attacks as the grog came spine chillingly close to falling onto the road.
Luckily no one died of alcohol poisoning-it was a real possibility as it was 'all you drink'.
Afterwards we were going to hit 'Noon' but the music was no good so we went back to Stew's, I ate some cucumber and then hit the sack, I was so tired. Today I just watched movies, on my way home I came close to fainting owing to the fact that I hadn't eaten all day but I grabbed some Macca's (McDonald's) and was alright.
I've been having some trouble with putting photos on here but I'll try to soon.

BIG weekend

On Saturday we went to the BLue Billabong to watch the footy grand final between Geelong and Hawthorn. I was bloody nervous before and during the game. I go for the Geelong Cats who were the favourites, Geelong really didn`t play well and it was painful to watch. It was made even more painful by the fact that we had about 5 ratbag Hawks supporters sitting behind us complete with jumpers and scarves, eeeewwww. We had to leave a little early, it was clear we had lost and as we left, the supporters gave us a little clap, as if our spirits weren`t already crushed enough. We then went to play a footy game (the Osaka Dingoes) we killed the opposition by 126 points. After that it was off to an izakaya, we ate and drank a lot!. A few of us stayed afterwards to finish the drinks, and we were pretty much hammered. Singing songs we staggered to Noon, a club in Umeda. Weird music, I was dead by 2am but I stayed on till 4.
I went to some temples in Tennoji and the tower in Shinsakai on Monday, geez that`s high- a really great view, that was beaut, afterwards I had to go to work.

French Festival

Yesterday I went to a French part/festival thing held at the France club in Nara. It was free wine but I realised something last night-I don`t really like wine. It goes well with a meal but by itself it`s really nothing special, beer is much better. Anyway, they had free food there, although I didn`t touch some of the more suspicous looking fare. I`ve heard stories about French food that has led me to the rule that if I don`t know what it is then I`m not touching it. Most of the night people were talking in French, Russian or Japanese so I had no idea what was going on. I was so buggered on the trip back home. Had a couple of beers and listened to some Enka music before going to sleep.

Beach Volleyball

On Saturday I saw quite a sight-A jogger dressed in 1980`s era bike shorts and matching top with multicoloured shoes, pink socks, bum bag adorned with mickey mouse figurines and an outrageous blonde/black mop hairstyle-that made my day, too bad I couldn`t get a picture. Got home at 8am on Sunday because I missed the last train back, they only run till 12. So yesterday I slept until about 2 and then watched the womens beach volleyball.

Nothing Special

I haven`t been doing anything too interesting these past few days. Yesterday I had work at 5 and then 9, so I had too wait around for 3 hours, to make matters worse I couldn`t use a computer. Got home at around 12 and sunk a couple of brews. There`s nothing better after a hard day. Thankfully, it`s sunny today so footy training will be on, if not I have no idea what I would do. Last night the footy team I support won so they`re in the Grand Final!
I would write something witty now but I have to go to training.

BBQ near Umeda

Well I went to a BBQ on Sunday, it was great fun, I love a Japanese barbie, the organisation, the delicous thin meat and the lovely charcoal flavour. However what I saw on the way to the BBQ I didn`t like so much- a crow with a birds wing in it`s mouth. Firstly, how did it acquire that wing and secondly, what the hell was it doing with it in it`s beak? Are crows cannabils? If so, no one told me.
I got pretty badly sunburnt at the BBQ so everyone thought I was drunk.
I took a picture, I`ll put it up later.

2008年9月12日金曜日

Very Long walk...

Ive not been able to access a compute for a while and nothing much interesting has been happening although I have worked out that I need 9 hours sleep per night.
The other day I went for a three hour walk because I had nothing to do, it was great, I saw all types of wonderful flora and fauna, if you dont know what that means then jump on the dictionary. There were herons and turtles and all sorts of things. My grammar is a little off today because I cant find the apostrophe key on this computer.

Daily Life

I haven`t really been doing anything special recently, just a little Japanese study, TV watching and Grand Theft Auto playing. I really love that game. We had footy practice yesterday but only about 5 people showed up, afterwards I went drinking and only got to sleep at 6am, bloody hell! My computer`s is still dead so I have to go to internet cafes.
Today a Gaijin served me, that was weird, I had no idea what to say,` should I speak Japanese or English?` to make matters worse he had a German accent and was looking at me as though I were beyond his contempt.
The weather is a bit strange, still pretty hot but with lots of rain, I feel it`ll turn pretty soon. Geez, I`m not looking forward to the Winter, it gets so cold and it feels like it gets into your bones. I`m pretty happy today because my team-The Geelong Cats won their first game of the finals- `Carn the Cats!`. Well I best be off, don`t want that German coming after me.

Beer Garden

Last night I went to a beer garden with my flatmate, the beer was so good and they had one of those automatic beer pourers-so awesome. However, in my opinion Japanese pour a beer with too much head, when the foam settes down you`re left with 4/5ths of a beer.
I reckon I should take my sweet new bike `Mary Lou` to Kobe, perhaps I`ll buy some handlebar streamers for the occasion, I think we`ll be the talk of the town when we cruise in.

Too much Curry

What a day yesterday! Only three people at footy training as the weather was pretty bad, after that I went to my freind Stew`s party he was having at a curry restaurant. All you can eat is always a bad idea! I was sweating curry afterwards. Afterwards I followed some people to a party they were having. Bloody hell they were crazy, drinking games with shochu is also not a good idea. God I drank a lot.
Today I bought the sweetest bike for 78 Aussie dollars. You can`t get away with riding a woman`s bike in Australia without at least some embarrasment but here it`s status quo and I love it.

Kobe Trip 2

Well I haven`t been able to access my computer because it has a bloody virus at the moment. Who creates those things and why? I finished work at one yesterday and had nothing to do so I headed to Kobe, I went to the Gaijin houses again but this time they weren`t closed so I could go inside. The house was okay but a little sparse for my liking, stately yet overrated in my opinion. It was lacking an entertainment room, although the view of Kobe was great. I then went for a walk in the mountains surrounding Kobe- so beautiful, but in my walk I nearly fell down the side of the mountain, anyway I made it back home safe and well.

Spare time

This is a picture taken just outside my house in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia. This is probably the best part of Melbourne, about 10 km from the city and 2 minutes from the beach. There are a lot of tourists, particularly around Acland street, which has many cafes. If you ever find yourself in Melbourne I recommend you visit. Yesterday I only worked for one hour. I went out at 8 and wandered the streets of Namba and Shinsaibashi, I thought I should call my family. After that I went to a bar and got home at about 2.
Today we had footy, there was some crazy dance spectacular at the same park, that was a sight. One of our players sprained his ankle so that wasn`t fun. I took the train to Tennoji, walked home and cooked some karaage chicken.
Miss Japan hasn`t inquired about the flat yet, I`m starting to have doubts, oh well, there`s always that crazy man who keeps stealing my underwear...

Movie

Well yesterday I saw Dark Knight, the new batman movie, whoa was that good!Apart from that I didn`t do too much, just a little Japanese study, terebi and reading. Today I bummed around until 3, when I had to go to work. I`ve made some flashcards with a Japanese word (usually a verb) and the English translation on the back so that`s good for studying. I cooked yaki soba today, an Osakan dish made with pork, cabbage, carrot, onion and noodles which you buy pre cooked and then heat in a pan.
We still haven`t got a flatmate but hopefully this week and hopefully it`s Miss Japan.

Suma beach and the jellyfish

Last night I was incredibly bored, I did nothing between 2 and 10pm because there was no footy. I decided to see a movie because I had to get out of the house-I was imagining ghosts. The movie was `What happens in Vegas` suprisingly it was pretty good (I was expecting crap). Today I woke with purpose, I decided to hit Suma beach, I got there at 2.30. That beach has a great atmosphere-shops, beach games and drinking, however it`s a little dirty, in fact the water was filthy and something stung me, I got a bit of a rash so I didn`t go back in the water but I had a great time.

One of my pet hates is those motorcyclists who drive up and down the street revving there engines until it nearly bursts your eardrum, everybody hates them and to my dismay I learnt that some ratbags do the exact same thing on JETSKIS! You just can`t get any peace.

I was about to leave but I thoought I should have a walk, turned out there was a massive dance party! Everyone was going off. I saw my friend coincedentally and she got me into a VIP tent. Great stuff, some girl was giving me shochu out of a water bottle, headed back at 9.30pm and now I`m pretty tired.

Free grapes

Today I was so tired, only got 6 hours sleep. Finally lugged myself out of the flat and made it to work in the `nick of time`. I was so tired at work so in between classes I had a nap and when I woke up I had a sore back. The great thing about working in Korien is the taco yaki shop, the best ever. Taco yaki is my favourite Japanese food, it goes down a treat after a big night drinking, but never with mayonnaise.
I was eating my lunch outside a supermarket when a lovely, freindly old lady came up and gave me a bunch of grapes! You can`t get much better than that!

Lots of walking

I`ve been a little bored recently. There has been no work this week as a lot of people are busy this month. I had nothing to do today except a private class at 6.30. I did some Japanese study, I`m trying to learn verbs-pretty difficult stuff. I headed off for Yodoyobashi train station on foot as I had nothing better to do, it took about an hour but I got a little lost so I had to take the subway. Turns out my student had forgotten about the class but I saw him as he was going to dinner with his family and he kindly paid me anyway. I got back to Yodoyobashi at 7, again I had nothing to do so I just walked home. Watched a really good dorama set in a school, whoo that teacher is good. That was the highlight of my day in fact, that or the can of mandarins I ate earlier.

Umeda Fireworks

Worked all day yesterday and then went with some students and the boss from my eikaiwa to the fireworks in Umeda, we walked from the station to Juso but all of a sudden right before they begun it started raining cats and dogs. There was lightning and thunder but we got a great spot below a bridge, only problem was- so did about a thousand other people, I thought I was going to be crushed to death. The fireworks were great but then some girl started rubbing against me and then gave me an indignant glance when I moved away.
At night I went to `Rock Rock` in Amemura, bloody hell it was hot in there and some loony had a jumper on. Good music there, got home at about 5am.

High School Baseball

Woke at 11am today. There was no work so I had absolutely nothing to do. I thought I may as well go to the baseball at Koshien Stadium. It was free if you sat in the worst seats, but you could still see pretty well. I reckon baseball is no more exciting than test match cricket, which a lot of people say is very boring. Still, I had a good time, it was my first baseball match. Those supporters absolutely love it, they were going off! I was pretty dissapointed with myself in the end though as I had planned to drink 24 beers and get kicked out of the stadium on live t.v, oh well, I guess there`s always next time.

Beer Garden

Today for the first time I went to a beer garden.
The day started off quite slow, I slept in and missed work, unfortunately my alarm didn`t wake me up. I also went to International House but they had a convention on. The day wasn`t looking so good.
At least I was getting exercise from riding my mama chari. Went home for a bit and did some Japanese study, I really have to improve, also watched `Freinds`-I never appreciated how good that show was until I couldn`t understand anything else.
Met up with my student at 7pm, we went to the Hankyu beer garden-unluckily it started pouring with rain.

The rain came on so suddenly it was absolute chaos, we had to leave the beer and meat behind, sadly they didn`t make it, we had to leave them behind.
Left there and went to a restaurant in Umeda, bloody good food-sushi, beef, noodles and lots of grog(alcohol) めっちゃたのしRode home fro Umeda at 11.30.

Trip to Isonoura

Today Australian Rules Football training was cancelled so I decided to go to Isonoura beach in Wakayama, I had heard it was really good. Things got off to a bad start as I was in the wrong part of the train and was charged an extra 700 yen, I suspect the train lady loved it. Eventually I made it after getting lost a few times.

Pretty nice beach very close to the mountains. The water was really warm. Actually, it reminded me of the beach right near my house in Melbourne-St. Kilda beach. I liked it-it has a certain charm.

Unfortunately I realised that my shorts wouldn`t dry as I thought they would, that was a fun trip home!

Decided to stay at home tonight, managed to get my T.V working, so for the first time in 2 months I`ve been able to watch it. Woo-hoo! Too bad I have no idea what`s going on.

My flatmate moved out today and the other one`s in Tokyo so I`ve got the place to myself.

2008年8月2日土曜日

Yesterday I only had work for one hour. I headed out on the town after making a nice pork dinner. I`ve been looking for a replacement meat as I`ve become a little sick of chicken(basically eat it every day) and Japanese beef is a little expensive. Pork cutlets are beautiful-tasty, healthy and versatile. It was good to eat a nice meal as during the day my eating habits have gone a bit haywire.
I was walking to a bar last night when I ran into some fellow Gaijin, followed them to a bar in Shinsaibashi. All I remember is singing `happy birthday` and drinking champagne, also a transvestite comes to mind-Good times.

Day in Kobe

Here is my first post about a Gaijin`s life in Osaka.

Today I set out for Sannomiya, Kobe, about 30 minutes from Umeda. I went because there was no work today and therefore I was bloody bored. I had two options-get out and do something or sit on my arse and watch `Freinds` season 1 like Tuesday, damn was that a horrible experience-by the the time I left the flat I felt like jelly.

I headed off at 4, good train ride. Got to kobe and some old bloke nearly had a go at my because I got in his way, he mumbled something I couldn`t understand and then kept walking. I had no real plan so I just walked around. Eventually stumbled upon the old Foreigner settlement which I`ve always wanted to see.
The above was taken in front the Weathercock house. Unfortunately all the houses were closed off so I couldn`t go inside.
At this point I hadn`t talked to anyone in about 6 hours and was starting to talk and sing to myself, I figured it was time to find a bar.
Pretty difficult but eventually I found a cheap place.

Slammed back 3 beers then tried to call my freind Dante Sugar, not home so I went to a different place. Not so good so I decided to call it a day.

I took this picture of the old Panama consulate. I thought it curious that Panama would have a consulate to Japan around the turn of the 19th century. Was Panama even a country back then?
